November 2016) In order to provide growth potential in the online sector even more successfully, SIGNA Retail will acquire 87% of Europe’s leading bike and outdoor e-commerce company, internetstores. For SIGNA Retail, this participation is an important expansion step toward becoming an integrated trade company and a multi-channel provider as well as the leader in sports retail in Germany.The acquisition by SIGNA Retail combines internetstores’ international position and online expertise with SIGNA Retail’s comprehensive retail expertise. internetstores shall maintain its autonomy and shall also act within SIGNA Retail as a technology expert and a technology hub in the multi-channel sector. By linking the various online and offline competences and channels, both partners commit themselves to a rapid de- velopment on both sides in the future.
Europe’s leading bike and outdoor e-commerce company has been growing profita- bly since its foundation in 2003 by René Köhler. After the investment company, EQT Expansion Capital II, joined in 2012, the profitability of the company continued to im- prove while growth was strong. The company opened shops in seven new countries and acquired and successfully integrated Addnature, the Swedish market leader in the outdoor e-commerce sector.
René Köhler shall continue to be involved in the company as Chairman of the Advisory Board. Markus Winter, who has been actively shaping the company’s successful development as Managing Director of E-Commerce and Internationalisation since 2013, took over as CEO on 1 October 2016. The other Managing Directors, Bernd Humke (Finance) and Ralf Kindermann (Purchasing), are also staying on board.
Multi-channel business as an important value driver of SIGNA Retail
SIGNA Retail’s position offers an excellent platform and internetstores’ e-commerce expertise shall give fresh and valuable impetus to SIGNA Retail’s multi-channel strategy. Furthermore, internetstores, which already has successful online shops in 14 countries, provides excellent starting points when it comes to internationalisation.
The acquisition of internetstores is already SIGNA Retail’s third acquisition in the e-commerce sector this year, after the acquisitions of dress-for-less and OUTFITTER and shows how consistent SIGNA is in pursuing its strategic orientation of retail participation.
Thanks to this acquisition, SIGNA can massively expand its online presence and take the next step toward becoming a multi-channel provider. By taking this step, “SIGNA Sports Group”, together with Karstadt sports, OUTFITTER and internetstores will become the new German market leader in the multi-channel sports sector.
